New Caledonia is divided into three provinces, each with its own flag. As an overseas territory of France, the French flag was the territory’s only official emblem until 2010. In July of that year, the New Caledonian Congress voted to fly the Kanak people's flag: the banner of the FLNKS independence movement, alongside the French flag. That Kanak design is the one emoji vendors use for the New Caledonia emoji flag sequence. The characters behind it are 🇳 Regional Indicator Symbol Letter N and 🇨 Regional Indicator Symbol Letter C, and together they form a flag sequence that phones render as one image.
The New Caledonia flag emoji features three equal horizontal stripes and a yellow disc bearing a black spire emblem. The top stripe is blue, the middle stripe is red, and the bottom stripe is green.
Blue symbolizes the sky and the surrounding ocean, red stands for the blood shed by the people, and green represents the land and the community’s ancestral ties.
