In 2017, horizontal red bands were added to the top and bottom of Mauritania’s flag to symbolize “the efforts and sacrifices that the people of Mauritania will keep consenting, to the price of their blood, to defend their territory” [6]. The change was approved in a referendum held on 5 August 2017, called by President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, and formed part of a set of constitutional amendments that also altered the national anthem. Only newer vendor updates display the revised flag design. The Flag: Mauritania emoji is a flag sequence combining 🇲 Regional Indicator Symbol Letter M and 🇷 Regional Indicator Symbol Letter R. The national flag of Mauritania features a rectangular field with three horizontal stripes: narrow red bands at the top and bottom and a wide green stripe across the middle. Centered on the green band is a slender crescent moon cradling a yellow star.
The green represents Islam, the yellow recalls the Sahara Desert, and the red stripes symbolize the blood shed during the resistance against French colonial rule.
