In the 1950s, Puerto Rico asked Norway’s Foreign Ministry to intervene with the Norwegian transport and shipping company Det Stavangerske Dampskibsselskap (DSD), requesting that it stop using a flag that closely resembled Puerto Rico’s own. It is built as a flag sequence from 🇵 Regional Indicator Symbol Letter P and 🇷 Regional Indicator Symbol Letter R; devices that understand the pair draw the flag, the rest show letters.

The official flag of the State of Puerto Rico is very similar in appearance to the national flag of Cuba, but the stripes are changed to bold red and white. On the left (hoist) side a blue triangle contains a single white star at its center.
